EEB - Nature restoration takes off: mid-term assessment of National Restoration Plans

A new NGO-led evaluation finds that implementation of the Nature Restoration Law (NRL) is underway in most Member States, marking a crucial first step towards repairing Europe’s degraded ecosystems. With National Restoration Plans (NRPs)[1] taking shape across the EU, success now hinges on political leadership, proper resourcing and broad stakeholder backing.

EEB - Crafting an energy-efficient Europe

Europe is tackling CO2 emissions with a dual approach: increasing renewable energy and decreasing energy consumption. While renewables often steal the spotlight, energy efficiency tends to take a back seat despite its crucial role in Europe’s strategic goals. A new policy simulator aims to change this perception by illustrating the impact of energy-saving measures on the economy, wellbeing, environment and climate.

IUCN Director General's Statement for World Ocean Day

The ocean is a world with three dimensions. The first is depth, from the tides lapping at our feet on a beach to the marine trenches that plunge far into a realm untouched by sunlight. The second is length, with waves that travel thousands of miles between North Pole and South. The third is width, an immense body of saltwater enveloping the entire globe, coursing unbroken for more than 40,000 kilometres.

EEB - Overconsumption of transition minerals will cost us the earth

The world is scrambling for the critical minerals needed for the clean energy transition. Last week at the OECD Minerals Forum in Paris, representatives from government, business, and civil society discussed how to source them responsibly. But to avoid a repeat of past injustices and ensure a just energy transition, imposing strict sustainability requirements is not enough. Rich countries must curb their relentless production and consumption of critical minerals, argue Beverly Besmanos and Alejandro González.

EEB - UN declares right to a healthy environment: can the EU keep up?

The UN has finally recognised the right to a healthy environment as a universal human right. In a year that has seen people’s basic needs threatened and violated by climate disasters across the globe, the EEB urges the EU to guarantee this right for all, write Ruby Silk and Margarida Martins.

IUCN - Dragonflies threatened as wetlands around the world disappear

The destruction of wetlands is driving the decline of dragonflies worldwide, according to the first global assessment of these species in today’s update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Their decline is symptomatic of the widespread loss of the marshes, swamps and free-flowing rivers they breed in, mostly driven by the expansion of unsustainable agriculture and urbanisation around the world.

EEB - Non-replaceable batteries are bad news for the environment and consumers

Planning to buy a smartphone, an e-bike or any other product that includes a rechargeable battery for Christmas? New research shows that most batteries in today’s products cannot be easily removed, replaced or repaired, resulting in shorter device lifetimes, a loss of rare and valuable materials and billions in unnecessary consumer expenditure, writes Chloé Mikolajczak.
